True to what you’ve been told, Fallen Leaf is a little off the beaten track … but just a bit, and maybe just the right amount! Anyway, the good news is that there are 3 main options that are all pretty good but you’ll likely need to hitch a ride or rent a car.
1. Drive from San Francisco: This is a 3.5 hour drive without traffic. This time of year traffic can be a bit hairy but it’s focused around Friday afternoon/night and Sunday afternoon when people are commuting to the Tahoe basin and going home.

2. Fly into Reno: Reno is the closest major airport to Fallen Leaf and is about 1.5 hour drive if you rent a car and 2 hours if you decide to take a bus to South Lake Tahoe and then find your way to the lake (rent a car / taxi / friend picks you up).

3. Fly into Sacramento: This option saves you about 2 hours if you were planning on flying into SFO but you’re about 2 hours from the Fallen Leaf. From here you can rent a car or have someone grab you on their way up from the city. The latter might take a bit of coordination but it usually works out pretty well.
